Joseph M. Selba

Joe Selba is experienced in bankruptcy proceedings, as well as commercial and tort litigation. Mr. Selba maintains a diverse bankruptcy/restructuring practice, representing debtors, creditors, and trustees in Chapter 11 proceedings, workouts, liquidations, and financial restructurings. He is also skilled in the context of bankruptcy litigation, and has rountinely represented individual debtors in cases under Chapters 7 and 13.

In his litigation practice, Mr. Selba counsels and represents local businesses in commercial disputes and contract and tort cases in the Maryland Courts.

Mr. Selba's experience includes:

  • Defending an individual debtor in an adversary proceeding contesting the discharge of a multi-million dollar fraud claim, which resulted in a reported trial verdict for his client;
  • Prosecuting preferential and avoidable transfer claims, stay relief motions, lien avoidance actions, and claim objections in bankruptcy proceedings;
  • Prevailing on an objection to a Chapter 11 plan which sought to devalue a disputed real estate lien interest;
  • Handling collection and foreclosure proceedings for local financial institutions;
  • Obtaining dismissal of an individual Chapter 13 case to prevent a debtor's attempt to dischargea marital property award of approximately one-half million dollars to his ex-wife;
  • Successful workout and restructuring of a non-profit organization in lieu of real estate foreclosure and insolvency proceedings; and
  • Defending multiple tax lien holders through a bankruptcy sale plan, to enssure full repayment of the tax lien claims, plus interest and attorney's fees.

Mr. Selba is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Leadership and Community Involvement

Mr. Selba is an officer of the Bankruptcy Bar Association of Maryland, a council member of the Consumer Bankruptcy Section of the Maryland State Bar Association, and a member of the Bar Association of Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County Bar Association.

Mr. Selba regularly volunteers with the Maryland Volunteer Lawyer Service, and the Pro Bono Resource Center’s tax sale prevention clinic.

Mr. Selba is a board member of the Mt. St. Joseph Alumni Association and the Curtis Bay Athletic Association, a non-profit organization. He serves as a mentor in JHU’s Blue Jays Unlimited; coaches youth teams, including the MSJ Titans youth wrestling program and Pasadena Soccer Club; and is, along with his wife and two sons, active in his church.

Before obtaining his law degree from University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, Mr. Selba earned his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University where he was a four-year starter on the wrestling team and received NCAA Division III Scholar All American honors.
