Laurie M. Wasserman, an associate in the Family Law Department, represents individuals in connection with complex domestic relations cases. She has been involved in several complex matters in recent years, including: pre-divorce and post-divorce planning, division of property, alimony, support and maintenance, child custody and visitation matters, and name change petitions. She also works with young professionals looking for a fresh start without costly dicorce litigation.
Ms. Wasserman particularly enjoys working on cases that allow her to assist children with the inevitable transitions that occur during domestic relations cases.
Some recent cases include:
- Represented a child with cerebral palsy in a best-interest attorney capacity. Working with special educators and health care providers, she was able to successfully negotiate a custody agreement that incorporated the child’s needs as well as the wishes of both parents;
- Represented a father in complex divorce case that allowed him to retain use and possession of the family home and primary custody of the children; and
- Represented clients in drafting separation agreements that not only have custody provisions, but look forward to the minors’ future needs, including agreements on higher education expenses.
With Maryland’s passage of the Civil Marriage Protection Act granting same-sex couples the right to marry, Ms. Wasserman has helped couples transition from domestic partnership arrangements to the traditional marital model, including drafting pre- and post-marital agreements and modifying or voiding domestic partnership agreements as necessary. She can advise clients on their legal rights when adopting or having biological children. Finally, she can assist them in negotiating and drafting separation agreements to dissolve same-sex marriages.
Ms. Wasserman is a certified Maryland mediator, and in 2007 received her certification in Child Counsel's Training from the Administrative Office of the Courts, Family Administration. She has served in the capacity of a court-appointed attorney to represent children in contested custody cases.
